She entered Helcel House, but before pressing the handle of the office door, through the whitewashed glass of another inner door, she saw Sister Bibianna standing on the threshold of the chapel. She appeared to be signaling, so Zofia went a few paces closer. Bibianna had just pushed a bath chair to this point; in it, huddled under a blanket, sat a wrinkled old resident, evidently wishing to say his prayers in a more venerable place than his own bed.

On seeing Zofia, Bibianna was plainly confused.

“I have something for you, madam, but not here,” she whispered.

“By the coffins.”

“What coffins?”

“The residents’ coffins. Left-hand entrance to the cellar. In . . . half an hour,” she said, glancing at the wall clock.
